HH.: Where are the places you draw? Are they all in America?

M. R.-R.: Yes and no, I dont think of them as taking place in America per se, as much as a fictional place that AmericaNorth and South has come to represent for me, through my readings and personal history. To make a long story short, I was partly brought up on an US military base in Panama, and I read almost exclusively American litterature.

HH.: What about American art? Im thinking particularly of certain photographers, like Eggleston, or a painter like Ruscha.

M. R.-R.: Of course I look at his paintings, although I consider my work to more diaristic, much less cerebral than his.

HH.: What about European Art? Some of your works reminds me of Italian Metaphysical Paintings, like De Chiricos empty piazzas.

M. R.-R.: I wouldnt make too much out of it. There arent many drawings where you can make that connection, but it probably comes from the fact that my drawings lack any trace of human presence, and that the spaces that I draw are artificial, can be percieved as « decores ».

HH.: When are these fictions taking place? Yesterday? Now?

M. R.-R.: Im not sure, I consider them to be unstuck from real time. There is an apocalyptic quality to them though, the sense of a world coming to an end, that comes through, almost beyond my control.
